Concerning Jimmy

James “Jimmy” Lilly is a lifelong West Virginia and Ohio native who has spent the last 14 years in Jacksonville, Florida with his wife and three children. His early years were shaped by a close‑knit small‑town upbringing, strong community ties, and involvement in music, football, and band. Jimmy’s path includes three stints at Marshall University, military service in the Air Force, and a wide range of professional experience, ultimately leading to his current role as Billing and Collections Manager at Allstate. His journey reflects persistence, adaptability, and a deep connection to education, service, and career growth.

Career Analysis

I have a very broad array of work experience that has spanned quite a number of decades now. Everything from service industry to Insurance and everything in between. I started working at 14 years old as a bus boy for Shoney’s. I joined the Air Force to support Desert Storm when I was 19 almost 20 years old. From there I worked as a Business Advisor for the Small Business Development Centers, as a Sales Manager for Aaron’s, and a Service Advisor for dealerships. I am currently a Billing and Collections Manager for Allstate in their Dealer Services Division. I started with Allstate as a claims adjuster for their Vehicle Service contracts utilizing all my experiences with business and dealership knowledge, along with my mechanical expertise. After 3 years, I was promoted to my current position in which I have worked for 5 years.

My Mission

Why do I do what I do? I have a few motivations. Self-fulfillment – I love my job. I really enjoy going to work every day.  I enjoy leading others to success. I am solely responsible for the financial wellbeing of my family. My wife is a stay-at-home mom. If I don’t work, we don’t eat. Eating and having a warm bed is a great motivator. I want to make a difference in our company. I am good at what I do and enjoy the recognition I get.

My Goal

In the immortal words of Mark Metcalf in the Twisted Sister music video – “I wanna Rock” – “what do you want to do with your life?!” My Goal is to become a department manager. I am currently a team manager responsible for a team of 8 individuals. We are under the Operations umbrella. As a department manager, I would be responsible for 2 or more teams and team managers. I believe at that level; I can really make a difference on how we accomplish our goals as a company and how we shape our future goals. I still can shape that but not at the impact I would have as a department manager. Any higher and I believe I would be burned out easily. As Biggie said, “Mo money, mo problems.”

My Educational Journey

Organic Education – I have always been hands on and had a mechanical aptitude. I learned how to work on cars, engines and airplanes through hands on experience and repetition. This part of my education taught me some personal growth as well. I learned how to pivot on the fly when something didn’t work right. I learned how to critically think through a problem because something needed to be MacGyvered and how to solve problems.

Institutional Education – I have furthered my education through Marshall University. My major is business management with a minor in marketing (once graduated). This formal education is teaching me how to manage people, work within programs and formulas, and further my critical thinking skills.

Community Involvement

I volunteer at the Humane Society, and we foster animals a few times each year. I am a member of the Mandarin Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Florida and serve them in whatever capacity they need from greeting to cleaning.

My "Big 3" places I want to work for

Allstate – I would be remise if I didn’t select my current company were I truly would love to retire from. Entry level as a claims adjuster and learn the insurance industry. Allstate is an international company with offices all over the world. They offer insurance products (home, auto, life) along with total protection services such as extended warranty coverage for vehicles and identity protection. The major divisions of Allstate are the Casualty & Property, Personal lines and Ancillary coverages.

Dunn & Bradstreet – They are an international private U.S. company headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. They have a global database with over 500 million business records. I would like to work in the sales and marketing data and analytics department. They provide credit, risk, compliance, sales, marketing and data analytics products. They are segmented into 2 divisions US and International.

Deutsche Bank – They are a international financial services and investment banking institution and classified as a global systemically important bank. They provide a comprehensive suite of banking and financial services to individuals, corporations, institutional investors and governments. They have 4 primary business divisions – Corporate Bank, Investment Bank, Private Bank and Asset Management. I would like to start in risk assessment analytics in operations.

Personal Interests and Hobbies

I really enjoy putting model kits together. I restarted this after a long multi-decade hiatus. I love attending renaissance fairs and medieval times. I love history documentaries and learning about the Middle Ages. I am a huge Tolkien fan.  I play tabletop gaming and video games. Even though I like nerdy things, I also enjoy football and am a die-hard NY Jets fan. I enjoy playing golf though I don’t get to play as often as I would like.
